Bentota

Bentota is the prime beach resort of the south-western and southern coastal belts of Sri Lanka. South of the city of Colombo, the city of Kalutara with its fine beach is the gateway to south western and southern bay beaches. Kalutara is the next popular beach. The Beruwala Bay Beach that is just before reaching Aluthgama at the Bentota Bridge and Bentota Bay Beach just over the bridge are the most popular twin beaches in the coast. The coast to the further south and onwards to the Deep South too is replete with lovely topical beaches.

Galle

The seaside town of Galle or “Gaul”, can be visited by tourists by travelling 116 km from Colombo along side the south western coast of Sri Lanka. Travellers will love the picturesque routes moving alongside the south western coastline closely for much of the way. The port city of Galle is the best example of a fortified city built by Europeans in Southeast Asia. Galle is a perfect blend of natural beauty and history with its colonial villas and houses surrounded by panoramic view of ocean.

One of the most admirable features of the town is the great architecture of historical monuments. There are no words to describe the charming natural beauty of Galle surrounded by ocean from three sides. The major tourist attractions of Galle are the city Fort, Dutch reformed church, Dutch museum, lighthouse, the majestic and old Clock Tower. Galle fort is a structure that should not be missed, known among travellers for its unique European architectural style and its grand size. The city fort is a UNESCO world heritage site. Tourists can also enjoy shopping in the traditional markets of Galle, which are among the oldest markets of Sri Lanka. Kalpitiya

Mirissa

Mirissa is popular among tourists for its beautiful sandy beach with relaxed and picturesque environment. Mirissa is a secluded bay lying abut 5 kms from Weilgama. Travellers love this small fishing village with its wide stretch of golden beach lined with palm trees. Like other beaches on the Southern coast of Sri Lanka, Mirissa is good for body boarding and surfing. There are also options of snorkelling here, however, the infrastructure is not as developed as other southern beaches.

Located at the southernmost tip of Sri Lanka, this panoramic bay is a perfect retreat for tourists where they can feel relaxed and rested forgetting all their worries. Mirissa beach is safe for swimming with calm and clear waters. There are restaurants and bars located on the back side of the beach, where travellers relax drinking chilled beer. Apart from relaxing at the beach, visitors can also visit the Fishermen village and the Buddhist temple. Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay is very popular among tourists as it is a pristine beach that is one of the nicest beach on the South East coastline. Arugam Bay is frequented by tourists especially surfers as the beach has attractive waves and a secluded beach. The wide curved sandy beaches of Arugam Bay is less crowded with hotels and restaurants as compared to the South coast beaches. The best season for surfing and swimming for travellers is from May to October as the waves are more calm at this time. Tourists can also enjoy snorkelling near Arugam Bay and view the beautiful coral reefs and colorful torpical fishes.

Other traveller attractions around Arugam Bay are two National Parks – Lahugala and Yala East. There is also a 2000 yr old Buddhist temple – Magul Maha Viharaya near Pottuvil Point, Arugam Bay. Tourists can also take a tour using canoe of beautiful mangrove ecosystem that is 2 km from Arugam Bay.
